The fellowship is limited to two fellows per year, selected on a competitive basis that is open to physicians who are currently enrolled in or have successfully completed an ACGME accredited residency in Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
The goal of the fellowship is to provide a supportive and diverse learning environment for specialized training in sports medicine (non-surgical) and exercise related injuries within a system that provides high quality primary and sports medicine care for all patients, as well as the specific populations of recreational, elite, scholastic and NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate athletes.
The fellowship will provide the training opportunities needed to diagnosis and manage chronic/acute injuries and illnesses related to sports and exercise. Fellows will gain expertise in injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, return-to-play criteria and rehabilitation. Fellows will function as a team physician at the high school and collegiate level and serve both individual patients and the community through the promotion of physical fitness and wellness. The fellow will be actively involved in education with participation and presentation in multiple teaching settings as well as working with other learners such as orthopedic sport fellows, residents, medical students, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches and athletes. Additionally, the fellow will be vigorously encouraged to develop and execute their own personal exercise/fitness regimen while working with the exercise physiology staff at the UNM Human Performance Lab.
Fellows work with and learn from fellowship trained sports medicine physicians and orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, musculoskeletal radiologists, sports psychologists, exercise physiologists, a sports nutritionist, and other specialists.
Our team has nationally reviewed and published research in numerous journals including topics in traumatic brain injury, shoulder and knee reconstruction, and athletic medicine.
As of 2010, the ACGME has continued accreditation for the Sports Medicine Fellowship, through 2023

If the applicant is accepted and appointed to the UNM Health Sciences Center, Department of Family & Community Medicine, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, the following are required prior to starting the Fellowship:

The program is directed by Chris McGrew, M.D. Dr. McGrew has been at the University of New Mexico since 1990 and is a Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. He serves as an assistant team physician for the University of New Mexico. He is a fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and is a charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

The assistant program director is Matthew Tennison, MD. Dr. Tennison graduated from the University of Arizona fellowship program in 2012 and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He serves as an assistant team physician for the University of New Mexico Lobos. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
