About DFCM

The Department of Family and Community Medicine DFCM has been an independent department at the UNM School of Medicine since April 1, 1967. Under the leadership of Dr. David Rakel, Chair, the Department is an enthusiastic and dynamic environment where faculty, staff, and students are engaged in academic scholarship, collaboration and providing effective healthcare and programs for rural and urban New Mexico. Our culturally diverse population is one of our strengths, with a spirit of equity, partnership and respect permeating our community, both internally and externally. Our curricula are designed to be innovative, practical and relevant to the community’s changing needs.

Our goal is to stretch the boundaries of educational innovation, provide exceptional patient care, and to increase relevant contributions to academic scholarship, leadership and the development of faculty, staff, students and patients.

International Recognition

The Department’s performance in carrying out its education mission receives national and international recognition for innovation in education and responsiveness to individual and community need through its service/learning models. In US News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue for 2016 the UNM Health Sciences Center's curriculum received a ranking of 3rd in Rural Medicine (run by the department). While this is not a scientific ranking, it reflects the degree to which national leaders in medical education recognize the unique contributions and dissemination of UNM’s unique programs.
