Dr. North is a professor of family and community medicine at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine. He received his MD degree from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, completed Family Medicine and Community Health residency and a Master’s of Science in Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota. He worked on the Hopi Indian Reservation for seven years and retired from the Indian Health Service and Commissioned Officer Corps of the USPHS after 31 years. He established the first 100% smoke free hospital policy in the United States. He is a co-founder and former director of RIOS Net and started the family medicine residency teaching site at IHS. His interests include Indian Health care teaching, policy and practice. He holds the administrative title of Executive Medical Director for Ambulatory Services at the University of New Mexico Hospital. In this role he leads the development of a high functioning health care system and improvements in ambulatory patient care such as the Patient Centered Medical Home.
