Robert L. Rhyne MD, is a Professor and Vice Chair for research in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. His MD is from the University of New Mexico and he did a Family Medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar in Clinical Epidemiology at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine. He co-founded RIOS Net, a primary care practice-based research network, in 1999 and serves as one of its co-directors. He has over 40 years of practice experience in primary care and has been PI and co-investigator on multiple NIH funded projects.

In 2002/03 he was a Fulbright Scholar and visiting professor at Moscow Medical Academy in Russia, studying post-soviet primary care systems and community health in Russia. And in 2004/05 he was the technical officer of a USAID project to improve primary health care in Albania.

His research focuses on health disparities, evidence based medicine, translational practice based research, and preventive medicine. His research topics include colorectal cancer screening in multiethnic populations, quality improvement in small primary care practices with regard to cardiovascular prevention, and the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain, specifically with respect to opioid prescribing. He serves as director of the Community Engagement and Research Core for the UNM Clinical & Translational Science Center, one of 67 CTSAs in the country funded by the NIH.
