Armitage joined UNM Family and Community Medicine (FCM) in 2012 as an associate clinical professor. Prior to that, she served for over two decades in the public health sector, serving as chief medical officer for New Mexico Department of Health in 2007-2010. Since 2012, she has directed a UNMHSC statewide health improvement initiative, aligning partners in the health sciences center with community partners to address population health outcomes. She also teaches public health and health policy to third and fourth year medical students and organizes an annual conference in innovative care models for rural and urban underserved populations. Karen received her MD from University of California San Diego and completed a UNM pediatric residency and a post-graduate research fellowship in pediatric public health in 1983, including completion of core MPH courses at University of Minnesota.

  • Since 2000, Karen has directed an annual rotation for family medicine residents at the New Mexico State Legislature.
  • She served in the United States Senate as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow in Washington, DC, in 2014-2015. Karen received a secondary faculty appointment to the UNM College of Population Health in 2016.
  • In 2016, she received the UNM Leonard M. Napolitano, PhD Award.
